If there's something I've never managed to grasp

It's layers in photoshop. I literally do not get it at all.

I use an absolutely archaic old edition of Photoshop Elements a friend gave me a lifetime ago. On the side, I will mention I am not going to bother getting a different version so let's end that thought process. Anyway, it is very capable of doing layers from everything I see on it. How I actually go about doing so is another story. I've spent hours watching to flowery tutorials about how to go about this and read more than my share of rambling posts about how to go about blah blah but I've never had an ounce of success actually layering anything. Nothing seems to sync up with anything being described. I feel like learning about layering is not entirely dissimilar to the business plan of South Park's underpants gnomes. Oh sure, everyone gnome does it and they somehow get by, but lord knows no one can describe what phase 2 of the plan is.

Like, imagine it like layering tracing paper. You do the outline on layer 1, then layer 2 is skin, and while you work on layer 3, Layer 1 and 2 are safe from errors or stray key strokes.  And If you need to change it, say layer 2, Layer 1 and 3 are still safe.

But, no one says you have to do layers. People can stack pieces, on one or two. Some use hundreds of layers. When I had photoshop, that shit was like two massive layers. Also the DA MURO thing, has a layers option you can explore with.
